Summer of Congo…

Dear Friends of Exposing Hope,I am writing to thank our community for helping us raise critical funds in our recent fundraising effort.  We are thrilled that  our initial target has just been exceeded, but know that all funds above this will go expand our work. The fundly.com is still open until just after Labor Day, and we hope to continue to generate much needed support for the women and children who benefit from our safe houses and job training programs in Congo.

I have been a director of Exposing Hope since Alissa asked me to join in 2010, and proud of our ability to fund services to women and children in under-reported conflicts.  We get support from you, our friends, our community, and through donations and from sales of Alissa’s photography. As the organization matures we know it will attract different types of funding. We continue to set modest but realistic targets and achieve them.  We carefully manage expenses, as a volunteer run organization, and ensure funds are well allocated on the ground.  All of these attributes are all essential to the building of our good track record to date.

Alissa went to Congo in June, visiting six safe houses (Pinga, Nyamilima, Alimbongo, Kisharo, Kiwanja and Kayna).  She received new funding proposals, witnessed the implementation of programs we had funded, and delivered $14,000 (that many of you had generously donated) to HEAL Africa. The good work that she saw from her trip will take time to process, but it provided priceless insights into how we can support HEAL Africa and the people of Congo even more efficiently.  There is no substitute for being there and I am very thankful for Alissa and her (now) husband Peter Holmes á Court for riding the bumpy roads of Congo on our behalf.

As you may be aware, tragedy hit very close to Peter and Alissa during their trip, with a horrible accident impacting their wedding party and resulting in the death of their dear friend Will Poovey. Peter and Alissa are recovering and decided name one of the safe houses in Congo in the honor of the Poovey Family.  We all send our heartfelt condolences to the Poovey Family.

We send our gratitude to our partners at HEAL Africa, to the women working in the safe houses.  Finally, THANK YOU to our donors, friends, and supporters.

Please don’t hesitate to share this message with anyone who might still like to help those in such great need in Congo.

Sincerely,

Ken Harootunian
